Mary McLeod Bethune would have turned 143 on Tuesday
And outside her home on Bethune- Cookman University's campus, young and old, black and white, gathered to celebrate her life and her legacy.
Linda McGee, program director with the Islamic Center of Daytona Beach, said she walked a mile and a half in the summer heat to honor Bethune, whom she hailed as “an advocate for education and for all people and religions.”
Florida Rep. Tom Leek said Bethune followed her dreams and lived her life with purpose. In doing so, she was able to envision a better world for herself and others. “She could see a world where a young black girl could go to college and…
